Hi! I'm Wendy Friedman...no, not the famous astrophysicist Wendy Freedman just a humble knitwear designer working in New York City.
I graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Textiles & Apparel Design where I mostly studied functional clothing design. You know...stuff like biohazard equipment, deep-sea diving suits, and spacesuits.
After deciding I didn't want to work for a government contractor designing clothing for soldiers (or "Soldier Systems" as they were euphemistically called) I switched gears and landed an ideal first job in the fashion industry. We were a young start-up putting on runway shows within the first 2 years and the learning curve was exponential. It was there that I met a woman who was helping us design and manufacture a few sweaters for our collection. She was her own boss, fully vertical in the sense that she could do every aspect herself, and had a pretty impressive client list. I decided I wanted to be that too but I barely knew anything about sweaters. As they say, the best way to learn something is to just throw yourself into it so I made it my mission to teach myself everything I could about knitwear. I still learn something new every day.
Eventually I was able to open my own consulting business and built an impressive client list of my own. I've also held full-time positions with some of the most recognizable companies in fashion and even became an adjunct professor at F.I.T. teaching knitwear to the next wave of talent.
I like to think I'm one of those rare creative people who also happens to like numbers and figuring out how things tick and since knitwear is a technical, and somewhat wonky specialization, it seems to suit me perfectly.
Thanks for visiting and enjoy!
